First Jacobite Rising; Gaelic Highlands heavily involved

The First Jacobite Rising

The Jacobite rising of 1715, often referred to as The Fifteen or Lord Mar's Revolt, was the attempt by James Francis Edward Stuart (also called the Old Pretender) to regain the thrones of England, Ireland and Scotland for the exiled House of Stuart.

Gaelic Highlands' Involvement

The rising was launched in Scotland in the summer of 1715 by John Erskine, Earl of Mar, an embittered ex-supporter of the ruling Hanoverian dynasty who had lost office. The Jacobite cause was supported by many Highland clans, both Catholic and Protestant. It also had significant support from Catholics in Northumberland and western England.
