The Second Jacobite Rising
The year 1745 marked the beginning of the Second Jacobite Rising, led by Charles Edward Stuart, also known as 'Bonnie Prince Charlie'. The Jacobites were supporters of the deposed James II of England and VII of Scotland, and his descendants. Their goal was to restore the Stuart family to the throne.
Charles Edward Stuart, grandson of James II, led the Jacobite forces deep into England. The Jacobite army, composed mainly of Scottish Highlanders, advanced as far as Derby, only 125 miles from London. This was the closest the Jacobites ever came to achieving their goal.
However, the Jacobite forces were ultimately unsuccessful. They were forced to retreat back to Scotland, where they were defeated the following year at the Battle of Culloden.
