Battle of Culloden: decisive defeat of Jacobite army; suppression of Highland culture follows

The Battle of Culloden

The Battle of Culloden in 1746 marked the end of the Jacobite Rising. The Jacobite forces, led by Charles Edward Stuart, were decisively defeated by the British government forces.

The battle was a turning point in British history. It marked the end of the Jacobite threat to the Hanoverian government. It also led to the suppression of Highland culture. The British government enacted laws to 'pacify' the Highlands, including banning the wearing of tartan and the carrying of weapons.
