Gaelic regiments formed for imperial wars; mixed impact on Highland society (indirect)

The Formation of Gaelic Regiments

In 1757, in the aftermath of the Jacobite Rising and the Battle of Culloden, the British government began to form Gaelic regiments for imperial wars. This had a mixed impact on Highland society.

On one hand, it provided employment for many Highlanders. On the other hand, it led to the further militarization of the Highlands and the continued suppression of Highland culture.
